I had the chance to tour the WCCO studio, and while I'm not necessarily interested in working in the news broadcasting industry, it was still cool as hell to see the behind-the-scenes. How did I come about this opportunity? Simply put, because of Twitter.
I followed Gregg Litman after seeing a few other people reference him in their tweets. I didn't even notice it, nor was I trying to, but I randomly was his 1000th follower on Twitter, and a real person from the Minneapolis area. Someone suggested that I should "win" a tour of the studio, and Gregg happily agreed. A few weeks later, I found myself here:
Frank Vascellaro and Amelia Santaniello, although she's behind the camera.
Chris Shaffer standing in front of the other Green Monster.
A few notes:- The behind-the-scenes team is very efficient. To run the actual news broadcast, it only takes five people plus the anchors.
- The cameras are all remotely controlled from the control room (I forgot to get a picture of this).
- The teleprompter is still manually controlled, since a human is reading it.
- Gregg Litman is a baller. You should follow him. If you are his 2000th follower, you'll win a free tour.
I found it to be somewhat similar to the movie Anchorman, just that everyone wasn't smoking and drinking, or wearing clothes from the '70s.
In the end, if you don't use Twitter because you think it's only so you can tell people you're eating a sandwich, you're wrong.
